As I mentioned in my Life Update back in September, I bought four personal growth books in an effort to work on my stress and how I handle things in general. I decided to start with Let That Sh*t Go: Find Peace of Mind and Happiness in Your Everyday. It took me a little while, but I finally finished the whole thing (yes, it’s kind of thick). We’ll go ahead and start with the book description then move on to what my thoughts were.
About
“Life is stressful as f–k. But it doesn’t have to be.
It’s no wonder you can’t calm down: your to-do list is as long as your arm, your bank balance keeps dropping, you feel guilty for not calling your parents more often and there always seems to be a big deadline to meet at work. You need a serious breather – but you can barely find time to shower, let alone to exercise or meditate.
In Let That Sh*t Go, Kate Petriw and Nina Purewal share the wisdom they’ve gained though decades of practising and teaching others to find peace of mind no matter how busy they are. Learn to put your life in perspective, take each day one step at a time and steal moments of calm amid the chaos. And remember: it’s not worth holding onto that sh*t.”
Book Layout
One of my favorite aspects of this book is how Petriw and Purewal structured it. There are a total of nine chapters:
- Awareness: Goodbye Past and Future Worries
- Self-Love: What You Didn’t Learn in Middle School but Probably Should Have
- Acceptance: You Can’t Control the Number of Instagram Likes You Get
- Perspective: You Are Made of F**king Stardust
- Authenticity: There’s Only One Magical You
- Forgiveness: It’s Time to Use the F-word
- Behind the Screen: Finding Your Tech Zen
- The Reveal: What the F**k Did You Just Do?
- Next Level: The Mind Workout
Each chapter has what I would call sub-chapters of mini topics within the bigger chapter topic. I loved this because it made so much easier to digest the information I was reading without feeling overwhelmed. Maybe it’s just me (or in my head), but it also felt like the reading went faster this way.
Review
Overall, I found Let That Sh*t Go pretty helpful. Is it extremely groundbreaking and new? No, it really isn’t. A lot of what Petriw and Purewal offer up are things we hear all the time or see in feel good quotes on Instagram.
However, they are offering it in a way that gives you part comedy, bits of science, logic and straight forwardness all in one. That is what I appreciated most about this book because for me, that’s exactly how I need these kinds of things presented to me. The parts of humor made this book an even easier read.
A few years ago in a Friday Favorites I talked about listening to the audiobook Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself by Dr. Joe Dispenza and loving it. So while I was reading the Self-Love chapter, I was pleasantly surprised to read Petriw and Purewal incorporate Dr. Dispenza’s education on rewiring our brains to achieve greatness.
I won’t go into too much detail (I want you to read for yourself!), but the gist of this section discussed positive self-thoughts and intention setting each day. While this may sound like any other self-help book, it’s definitely worth reading into Petriw and Purewal’s approaches on the topic. You should also give Dr. Dispenza’s book a listen!
If I had to give an actual rating, I would give Let That Sh*t Go a 4.8/5. If you’re struggling with stress or anxiety or even things from your past, I recommend giving Let That Sh*t Go a read. Even if the only thing you obtain from it is a smile or a laugh, that alone is worth the time.
