FIRST POST! YAY!! Around the time I started creating The LaLa Way, my mom and sister were planning our Sunday dinner for this month so it was obvious this should be my first post. Back in January we began our tradition of picking one Sunday each month to be our Family Dinner day where we pick a theme for that month and cook dishes to go with that theme. While we do tend to see each other more than once a month, we figured this was a good way to make sure we had a designated day where we all sit down at the table together and enjoy a fun, home cooked meal.
This month, Sunday dinner took place at Natasha and Steve’s new house and we went with a simple Spring theme. It’s finally starting to get warmer up this way so we wanted to celebrate that with Springtime decor and dishes. Let’s jump in and check out what we had going on! Natasha did a beautiful job decorating the table with a bouquet of flowers she bought inside her boat looking centerpiece (isn’t that thing awesome?!).
The place settings were pretty easy to make with folded cloth napkins and flowers cut from their front yard. As I was helping set the table and taking pictures I was laughing to myself, telling Natasha that the readers I actually get are probably going to think we just set this up all nice for the blog. Even though it’s only ever the 6 of us (Mom, Dad, Natasha, Steve, Grandma and I), we always try to at least decorate the table for the theme. Mom is still upset we didn’t have a St. Patrick’s Day dinner so she could use the decorations she has for it. Next year Mom, next year!
Min-E (who will be fully introduced in another post) decided she would join the photo shoot. Always trying to be up in everything.
On to the good stuff: food! Dad so wonderfully wrote out our menu and we went with a more buffet style spread for the food.
Natasha came up with her own avocado deviled eggs (we love making deviled eggs for get togethers) and Steve did his salmon, which were HUGE, on their large George Foreman grill. One or both of these recipes will likely find their way to the blog soon.
I’ll be honest, I am not a huge vegetable eater. I have a select few that I actually eat and trust me, peas are not one of them. But Natasha decided to make Fresh Pea Soup, which can be found here, and I will admit that it was pretty delicious. Steve wasn’t too keen our cute little bowls so he served himself a “real” sized bowl on the side.
This Spring Asparagus Salad was probably my favorite dish. It is absolutely delicious and definitely a must try! The Blueberry Mojito came from this website and it was extremely easy. I love how easy the blueberry syrup is and will be making it again just to put on pancakes or waffles.
Last, but certainly not least, is dessert. Dessert is almost always my responsibility since I love to bake. I found this cake while doing a Pinterest search for Spring desserts. Well come to find out peaches are actually a fall fruit, who knew? But I was able to find some in the grocery store anyway. The one bit of advice I would give is if you try this cake, do not let it stay in the oven for the entire hour it calls for. When you take the cake out, it stays cooling in the pan for about 40 minutes so it keeps cooking in the hot pan. Mine didn’t come out as moist as I like so I will probably take it out after about 50 minutes instead so that even if it keeps cooking, it won’t overcook during cooling.
Well I hope you all enjoyed getting a peak into our Sunday family dinner. We definitely enjoyed eating it! I wonder what next month’s theme will be?
