As far back as I can remember, we have always had at least one family pet. Pets are a big part of our lives and nowadays, they have become members of a lot of families. We love our fur babies, as I’m sure most of you do, so we thought it was a good idea to have a section on the blog dedicated to them. Sheba’s Corner will provide you all with different tips for your pets straight from our personal vets, Natasha and Steve. Before we even start posting those, I thought it would be fun to introduce you to our own pets since their pictures will grace these pages a good amount. Let’s get to it!
I will go ahead and start off with the cats in our lives. Most importantly: the section’s namesake. Sheba was awarded the privilege of having her name used since she is the oldest and basically the queen bee. We got Sheba when she was a baby, who we had to feed with a bottle, and have had her for more than half my life. At 19 years old, Sheba has outlived even those animals who came after her. She is no nonsense, mouthy and definitely does what she wants.
Next up we have my own cat: Scout. I received Scout as a gift after my first semester of law school and she has quite the personality. I will admit she isn’t the most cuddly of cats and can be what we would call a brat but she is definitely entertaining. When she was a kitten, Natasha and I taught her to come and to sit (and she does it…when she feels like it). She also learned to fetch by accident. Natasha and I lived together in NYC for almost 3 years and Scout would bring her toys to Natasha, who would then throw them so I guess Scout thought that was fun and it became a game for her. The crazy cat acts like a dog more than she does a cat, even growling when she hears things.
On to Natasha and Steve’s cat, who was seen in the very first post: Min-E. Min-E spent her first few years as a blood donor cat in the hospital where Steve did his residency. After a certain amount of time, the blood donor cats are retired and up to be adopted. She reached retirement around the time Steve’s residency was finishing so when he left, they adopted Min-E! It took her a little time to get used to not living in the hospital anymore but once she did, she took over. She’s basically the boss having no problem putting the dogs in check and has a hilarious personality.
The last 3 in our little clan are the dogs. First up: Dakota. Dakota is my parent’s Rottweiler and he’s now 3 years old. Dakota is the youngest in the group and acts like it most of the time. He is very sweet with us and loves to sit on the couch with you. I should really say on top of you since he constantly wants to be at least touching us somehow. As it is with his breed, Dakota is very protective of his family. But he loves nothing more than when his “friends” (Natasha and Steve’s dogs) come to visit!
Not too long after Steve started his residency, him and Natasha adopted their first dog: Brooklyn. Brooklyn, BK for short, is the oldest of the puppies and is very much her Golden Retriever breed. Like Dakota, BK likes to be on top of us. When she gets excited she grabs whatever she can find (as evidenced in the picture below) and makes Chewbacca noises. Dad likes to call her Firecracker because of her reddish fur and she runs like a psycho when she’s let outside.
Last, but certainly not least, we have little Colbie. Colbie was another rescue from Steve’s time in his residency. We don’t really know what exactly happened to her when she was a puppy but she was brought to Steve’s hospital with a number of injuries, including a hurt leg. She didn’t belong to anyone but they performed surgery on her and she was going to be adopted out once she recovered. Poor Colbie still couldn’t really walk on her hurt leg so Steve amputated it and she is now our little tripod. Steve and Natasha adopted her and now she’s a happy, lovable, sweetheart!
Well, there is our own little zoo! There will be more pictures of them and great tips to come soon!
